The Founding of the Society
The Acoustical Society of India traces its origin to a symposium on “Acoustics in Education” convened at Andhra University, Waltair, in January 1971. The gathering brought together physicists and engineers who resolved to form a national society for acoustics.
Five months later, on 31 July 1971, the Society was established and registered at Visakhapatnam under the leadership of its founder President, Prof. S. Bhagavantam. Dr. M. Pancholy served as Vice-President and as the first Chief Editor of the Society's journal, with Prof. B. Ramachandra Rao as Secretary-cum-Treasurer.
The Society adopted the motto नादाधीनमतोजगत् — “No World without Naada (Sound)” — carried on its emblem alongside the aspiration of advancing the science and technology of all branches of acoustics.
Today the Society sustains a national network of chapters and members, and remains an active member of the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA).
